BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL

 ADMINISTRATION AND PLANNING

(THE HOSTING DEPARTMENT)

In the 1977/78 sessions the Department of Education was detached from the Faculty of Arts to form Faculty of Education. The new Faculty started with two Departments namely Curriculum and Teaching and Adult and Continuing Education. The present Department of Educational Administration and Planning featured under Curriculum and Teaching.

The early Educational Administration lecturers were Prof. T. N. Ekpo, Mrs. Terese Ndonjko and Dr. D. O. Enyia. They taught few administration curses in the Department and the Faculty generally. In the 1981/82 session a new department was created out of Curriculum and Teaching named Educational Foundations and Administration. The creation of this department gave wider spectrum to the study and teaching of Educational Administration and Planning.

The challenges posed by this development led to the recruitment of more staff namely Prof. D. A. Edem, Dr. (Mrs) S. E. Etuk, Dr. P. J. Ntukidem and Dr. S. J. Okure at about this time too. The high level staffing, occasioned the commencements of higher degrees undertaken in Educational Administration and Planning.

The Department further enjoyed a boost in the 1997/98 session when she carved out of the Educational Foundation and Administration Department. This new status led to the recruitment of Dr. S. J. A. Mgbekem, Dr. C. P. Akpan, Mr. James E. Okon, Mr. John Undie and Dr. U. U. Bassey respectively to meet up with the phenomenal growth in the student enrolment at both graduate and undergraduate levels. The 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 witnessed inter-departmental transfer of Mrs. Lucy Udida, Mrs. Mary Sule and Dr. (Mrs) Grace Mbipom to the department. The Department now undertakes both Bachelors and Post graduate degree programmes in Educational Administration. At the Post-graduate level students are expected to specialize in any of the following areas:

1.              Educational Administration and Planning.

2.              Educational Administration and Supervision

3.              Administration of high Education.

4.              Economics and Politics of Education.
